Stan Eldon's running life started in 1948 when he saw the Olympic Marathon on film. He started running and joined Eton AC (later Windsor Slough and Eton)in 1949. He became an army champion, a police champion and an international athlete at the age of 21.

In later life he ran for charity including a run from Reading to London and ran from near Paris to Reading in 1982 and back the other way in 1992. A total distance each time of 176 miles,

In 1983 he set up the Reading Half Marathon and was the organiser of the event for 12 years. He still maintains an interest in the race by writing about the event for the Reading Evening Post each year.

On the last day of December 2007 he went into hospital for a heart operation and with complications he was there for ten weeks.
